Managing Our Power Consumption |
|
| |
 |
| |
The Library’s 56,000 square feet has a patchwork structure since the original 1950 Main Hall has been expanded four times with south, east and west wings, as well as a front entrance vestibule and a top floor storyhouse. With each renovation, new mechanical and electrical systems were added, and a variety of roofing systems tied in. These multiple structures and systems presented challenges to ongoing maintenance, operating costs, and environmental efficiency.
In 2010 we combined and upgraded the controls for our HVAC system, allowing us to run the system more efficiently and achieve a higher level of comfort.
We have recently replaced all of the single pane windows on the mezanine level with automated, energy efficient windows, which are tied into our HVAC system to allow for air cooling.
We use web-based energy management software to track our consumption. This allows us to identify problems, reduce power consumption, and save on our electricity costs. View our Pulse Energy dashboard.

Staff Green Team |

| |
 |

The Staff Green Team brings together staff members who are interested in making our library a sustainable workplace. We work on greening everything in our library from paint to transportation, and have shared our practices with other libraries.
Ecologically-friendly commuting methods such walking, cycling, public transportation and carpooling make up 50% of all staff members' trips to and from the Library.
